Women's Basketball Uses Late Run to Hold Off Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.- A 10-0 run to end the game helped the women's basketball team win their road conference game against the Montreat College Cavaliers on Thursday. The team won the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game 79-66.

After Jalaya Lindsey and Sloan Carpenter tied the game 3-3, Montreat scored eight of the next 11 points to lead 11-6 with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter. Camryn Brown's three-pointer and Courtney Berry's layup cut the deficit to one point, and a three-point play by Jordan White a few moments later tied the score 13-13. White's layup at the buzzer made the score 17-15 in favor of Montreat.

Four minutes into the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs took the lead. Brown hit back-to-back three-pointers, the first giving the team a 27-25 lead. As the team continued to lead, Leslie Hames hit a three-point basket to move the lead to 37-30. Lindsey's layup helped the team take a 39-32 lead into the halftime break.

Carpenter opened the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs with a layup and a pair of free throws by Hames gave the team back their seven-point advantage, making the score 43-36. The team went cold though as Montreat tied the game over the next few minutes at 43-43. Jada Edwards broke the drought, but the teams exchanged baskets over the remaining minutes of the third quarter with Brown's jumper with 44 seconds left giving the team a 56-55 lead.

Back-to-back layups by Carpenter extended the lead to 60-55 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. By the midway point of the fourth quarter, TWU had built their lead back up to eight points, leading 67-59 on Edwards' layup. Montreat made one more run at taking the lead, pulling within three points with 2:38 left. This is where the 10-0 run kicked in, with Brown, Lindsey, Carpenter, Edwards, and Talley Lawson all scoring to give the team the double-digit win.

Lindsey led the game with 24 points to go along with 16 points from Brown.

TWU (9-13, 8-9 AAC) returns to their home floor on Wednesday for a conference tilt with Truett McConnell University at 5:30 p.m.
