Women's Basketball Season Ends in AAC Tournament Quarterfinals

KINGSPORT, Tenn.- The season came to an end for the women's basketball team on Thursday. The fifth-seeded Lady Bulldogs fell in the quarterfinals of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament against No. 4 seed University of Pikeville 65-58.

Talley Lawson put the game in a 4-4 tie with a three-point jump shot. Jada Edwards tied the game again, this time using a layup to knot the score at six points each. The offense went cold though and Pikeville scored the final nine points of the first quarter to lead 15-6.

Back-to-back Jalaya Lindsey layups and a Lawson's three-point helped the team pull within four points of the lead. The score read 17-13 as Edwards went to the free throw line and hit two free throws to bring the team within two points of the lead. Lindsey and Camryn Brown scored two more baskets for the team but the Lady Bulldogs went into halftime trailing 24-19.

Five minutes into the third quarter, TWU had cut the deficit down to three points. Lindsey made a pair of free throws, making the scoreboard read 30-27. The momentum did not stay with the Lady Bulldogs as Pikeville scored seven straight points to take a 37-27 lead. The team was able to cut into the lead before the end of the quarter, using points from Leslie Hames and Sloan Carpenter to pus the score to 42-36 in the final stanza.

With 8:22 remaining in the game, a three-pointer by Hames brought the team two within two points of the lead. Pikeville scored the next four points to fend TWU from pulling closer. Hames three-pointer with 3:04 left brought the team within three-points but the team could not find the points to extend the game, seeing their season come to an end.

Hames led the team with 18 points.

TWU finished the season with an 11-15 overall record and 10-10 in the AAC.
