Women's Basketball Outlasts Pikeville in Two Overtimes

PIKEVILLE, Ky.- The women's basketball team added another win to their record on Wednesday after beating the University of Pikeville Lady Bears 92-88 in double overtime. 

The first quarter saw the largest lead only reach three points for each team. Julia Howard and Sloan Carpenter started the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs. Back-to-back baskets by Jada Edwards and Talley Lawson helped the team take their lead of three points, a 8-5 score with 4:09 remaining in the first. After a Jordan White basket made the score 10-7, Pikeville scored six straight points to lead 13-10 at the quarter break.

Trailing 23-18 close to the midway point of the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs ended the quarter on a 17-6 run. Jalaya Lindsey started the run with back-to-back layups, and an Edwards three-pointer gave TWU a 30-28 lead with 1:15 until halftime. Camryn Brown hit a three-pointer with four seconds left until halftime to give the team a 35-29 lead at the break.

The opponents took the momentum out of the halftime break, scoring 10 straight points through the first four minutes of the second half to take a 39-35 lead. Edwards stopped the drought momentarily, but with 2:47, Pikeville owned a 48-39 lead. Leslie Hames scored eight straight points to cut the deficit down to 52-47 at the end of the third quarter. 

The first two minutes of the fourth quarter saw Hames, Carpenter, and Edwards all score to give the team a 54-52 lead. A layup by White at the midway point pushed the team ahead 62-56, but with 2:27 left, Pikeville had tied the score at 64. Over the remaining time, the teams went in call and response mode, with Lindsey's layup forcing a 66-66 tie and Edwards tying the game at 68 a few seconds later. Lawson forced the game into overtime, knotting the score at 70 at the buzzer. 

The call and response continued in the first overtime, as Edwards hit back-to-back baskets to give the team a 76-74 lead. Pikeville scored to tie the game, and a layup at the buzzer missed, sending the game to a second overtime tied 76-76. 

In the second overtime, the breakthrough came after the score became tied 88-88. Edwards made four straight free throw,s and the defense was able to stop Pikeville from tying the score, giving the team the 92-88 win.

Edwards finished with a career-high 26 points in the win while Lawson had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists.

The win moves the team's record to 8-12 overall and 7-8 in the AAC.
