No. 8 Seed Baseball Run-Rules No. 6 Seed Johnson in Avista NAIA World Series Elimination Game

LEWISTON, Idaho- The eight-seeded baseball team won an elimination game at the Avista NAIA World Series on Tuesday. The Bulldogs beat the sixth-seeded Johnson University Royals 11-0 in seven innings.

TWU scored their first run of the game in the second inning. Kolton Reynolds became that run, scoring on a Thomas Teel RBI single. The Bulldogs did the rest of their scoring with two five-run innings in the fifth and sixth innings.

With the bases loaded by Hagen Escoto, Allan Gil Fernandez, and Rob Gordon, Josh Shelly hit a bases-clearing double down the left field line, moving the score to 4-0. David Ballenilla followed with a double to left field that would bring in Shelly. The final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Reynolds that Ballenilla scored on from third after a throwing error on his at-bat got him to the second to last base.

Shelly recorded three more RBIs in the sixth inning, this time blasting a home run over the left field wall to bring in both Fernandez and Gordon in the process. Reynolds second RBI of the game was a single that Ballenilla would score on while Brayan Espinoza hit a single that Reynolds scored on, giving the team an 11-0 lead that invoked the run-rule to end the game in seven innings.

McGwire Taylor finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts in the win.

TWU (45-15) will play the team that beat them on Monday, this time in an elimination game on Wednesday. The game on Wednesday is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.
