No. 9 Baseball Wins AAC Doubleheader Against Bluefield

ATHENS, Tenn.- The baseball team closed out the conference series against the Bluefield University Rams with a sweep on Saturday. The ninth-ranked Bulldogs won the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series with 9-2 and 8-0 wins.

Game One:

A throwing error helped the Bulldogs score the first run of the game in the first inning. The throwing error occurred on Kolton Reynolds' steal of third base, resulting in Reynolds going home and David Ballenilla getting to third. Ballenilla did not remain on third base as he scored on a Brayan Espinoza single, giving the team a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

After a run by Bluefield in the top of the third, Reynolds' single in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Bulldogs back out by two runs. Jonathan Bosque scored on the single.

Allan Gil Fernandez started a five-run sixth inning with a ground-rule double scoring Ethan Wright. A sacrifice fly by Espinoza brought in the next run when Ballenilla scored on the flyout and a throwing error moved the score to 6-1 when a throwing error gave Fernandez the space to score. Bosque hit a single that brought in both Reece Jordan and Cody McGill, giving the team a 8-1 lead. TWU scored their final run of the game in the seventh inning on a single by McGill.

Cameron Goffar picked up the pitching win, striking out six batters.

Game Two:

Tennessee Wesleyan led 4-0 after back-to-back two-run innings. The first two-run inning occurred in the second inning, starting with a fielding error on Thomas Teel's at-bat that allowed Jordan to score. Reynolds brought in the second run of the inning with a single scoring Hagen Escoto

In the third inning, Fernandez brought in the first of the two runs with a double, bringing in Ballenilla. Espinoza followed with a single that Fernandez would score on.

The remaining four runs for the Bulldogs came on a sacrifice fly and a home run in the sixth inning. Ballenilla hit the sacrifice fly while Fernandez hit a three-run homer to give the team their eight runs.

The wins moved the team's record to 28-9 overall and 15-3 in the AAC.
