No. 9 Baseball Breaks Game Open in Seventh Inning Against SMC
ATHENS, Tenn.- The ninth-ranked baseball team won their midweek game against the Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers on Tuesday. The team won the game 7-4.
TWU entered the bottom of the first inning trailing but left it leading 3-2. Ethan Wright opened the inning with a walk and got to second on a wild pitch. David Ballenilla brought in the first run of the game with his single scoring Wright. After a double by Allan Gil Fernandez, a balk tied the game with Ballenilla trotting home from third. A single by Brayan Espinoza gave the Bulldogs the lead when Fernandez scored on the hit.
In the bottom of the third inning, Tennessee Wesleyan moved their lead to two runs. With Wright standing on second after a double, Ballenilla recorded his second RBI of the game when Wright scored on his single. The lead did not last for long as Spartanburg Methodist tied the score in the fourth inning.
The Bulldogs broke the tie in the seventh inning. Reece Jordan opened the inning with a walk and got to scoring position via a stolen base. His return home was rather easy as it came on a two-run home run by Wright, moving the score to 6-4. The team added an insurance run in the eighth inning off Jordan's RBI single that brought in Jonathan Bosque.
Ballenilla and Wright both finished with two RBIs in the game. Jalen Fulwood got the pitching win while Carson Clark picked up the save.
TWU (25-9) returns to conference action with a series against Bluefield University, beginning with a single game on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
