No. 4 Baseball Hold Off Montreat
MONTREAT, N.C.- The baseball team picked up their second Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series sweep on Saturday. The fourth-ranked Bulldogs won the final game of the series against the Montreat College Cavaliers 12-8.
TWU scored in all but two innings in the nine-inning game. Back-to-back doubles gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The lead grew by a run in the second inning when David Ballenilla scored on Jonathan Bosque's single.
In the third inning, both teams scored. Reynolds would score on an error that came as a result of Ballenilla's single, making the score 4-0 at the end of the top of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, a single up the middle by Reynolds resulted in two more runs as Fernandez and Shelly both scored. In the top of the fifth inning, with the score 6-2 after a run by Montreat in the bottom of the fourth, Fernandez hit a two-run blast over right field to move the team's lead to 8-2, scoring Ethan Wright in the process. Montreat scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to pull within two runs of the lead though.
In the seventh inning, Fernandez helped the team extend their lead to four runs with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot over center field, bringing Reece Jordan in the process. TWU ended their batting portion of the inning with a 11-6 lead after Ballenilla's sacrifice fly brought in Shelly.
The team's final run of the game came in the eighth inning with a bases loaded walk by Shelly bringing in a Bosque. Montreat scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth but the Bulldogs ended the game before the opponents could pull any closer.
