No. 5 Baseball Knock Out Union Commonwealth
BARBOURVILLE, Ky.- The baseball team closed out the weekend with a 10-2 win over Union Commonwealth University on Sunday. The win completed the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series sweep after their two wins the previous day.
A bases loaded hit by pitch put Tennessee Wesleyan on the board in the first inning. Cody McGill was the batter hit by the pitch and Allan Gil Fernandez scored. The Bulldogs did not score again until the fifth inning.
A single by Brayan Espinoza brought in the first run when Josh Shelly scored. A ground out by McGill resulted in the team's second and final run of the inning, bringing in Bryant O'Neill to make the score 3-0. Shelly moved the lead to 5-0 with a double scoring Fernandez and Ethan Wright. In the bottom of the sixth, Union scored two runs to make the score 5-2. Tennessee Wesleyan used a four-run eighth inning to extend their lead.
With the bases loaded, Thomas Teel hit a ball to center field that resulted in an error, bringing in David Ballenilla while keeping the bases loaded. A walk by Espinoza brought in Fernandez and a single to center field gave Shelly and Teel the space to score. The final run of the game came on a Teel sacrifice fly, scoring Wright in the eight-run win.
McGill led the offense with four RBIs in the win.
McGwire Taylor got the pitching win for the Bulldogs, striking out eight batters in seven innings.
TWU (16-4, 6-0 AAC) will return to their home field on Tuesday to play a single game against No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett College at 5:00 p.m.
