Women's Lacrosse Falls on Road

MARS HILL, N.C.- The women's lacrosse team was not able to turn their winning streak to two games as they fell on the road on Wednesday. The team fell to NCAA Division II opponent Mars Hill University 13-9. 

The first quarter saw a defensive battle as the two teams combined to score only two goals on a combined 11 shots. The oppoents put the first goal in the net at the ten-minute mark while Kate Buchanan scored two minutes later to tie the game 1-1. 

The offense that was missing in the first quarter appeared in the second quarter as eight goals were scored. Mars Hill scored the first two to break the tie. Kylie Heinrich got one of the goals back but the deficit grew to 4-2 as the opponents scored after. Tennessee Wesleyan scored the next three goals, starting with a goal by Elizabeth Pluta. Aava Downey followed with a goal and Pluta scored her second goal to give the team a 5-4 lead. Mars Hill scored with 31 seconds before halftime to tie the score 5-5 at the break.

Unfortunately, the third quarter saw Mars Hill create some separation as the opponents scored four of the first five goals. America Barajas cut the lead down to run before two goals gave the opponents a 9-6 lead. Olivia Downey scored to bring the team within two but the opponents scored two more goals to end the third quarter leading 11-7. 

The opponents scored two more goals in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. TWU was not able to pull closer, seeing goals by Heinrich and O. Downey to close out the game.

Heinrich, O. Downey, and Pluta each scored two goals in the game. 

The Lady Bulldogs (1-1) stay on the road for their next game, a contest against Huntingdon College on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
