Women's Basketball Take Road Win Against Welch

GALLATIN, Tenn.- The women's basketball team played their first game after the Thanskgiving holiday on the road on Tuesday. The team traveled to a face a familiar foe from earlier this season, the Welch College Lady Flames. TWU defeated the non-conference opponent 74-56 in their season opener.

Through five minutes of the first quarter, scores from Mikalee Martin, Cambree Mayo, and Alexis Bates helped the team lead 8-4. With 3:25 remaining in the quarter, Welch had tied the game 8-8. By the end of the quarter, the Lady Bulldogs held a 21-10 lead. Points from Mayo, Martin, Jaci Powell, and Anna Crowder helped the team outscore Welch 13-2 over the last 3:25.

The team kept building their lead in the second quarter as a three-pointer by Powell and layup by Crowder made the score 26-10. After a Martin three-point basket, Crowder ended the second quarter scoring four consecutive points, helping the team lead 33-24 at the halftime break.

The points continued to climb on the board for Tennessee Wesleyan in the third quarter. Abbey Barr's layup moved the team's score to 39 points while a layup by Powell moved the team over the 40-point threshold as the score was 41-26. A layup by Sierra Bates gave the team a 20-point advantage as the scoreboard read 48-28 with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter. The team went into the fourth quarter leading 50-35. 

Mayo scored the first points of the final quarter for the team and Powell's three-point jumper made the score 55-42. Ella Crowder's layup moved the team over 60 points in the contest as the Lady Bulldogs went on to win the game 66-49.

Mayo led the offense with 13 points and seven assists while A. Crowder and Martin added 11 points and Powell contributed 10 points. A. Crowder led on the boards with eight rebounds.

Up next for TWU (4-3) play their final home game of the semester when they host the newcomers to the Appalachian Athletic Conference on Saturday, the University of Pikeville, at 2:00 p.m.
