Women's Basketball Moves Past Truett McConnell

Athens, Tenn.- The women's basketball team was back on their home court on Thursday. The team was looking to get in the win column in their game against the Truett McConnell University Lady Bears.

Three-pointers by Jordan Wright and Anna Crowder along with a layup by Cambree Mayo helped TWU take an 8-2 lead early in the game. Back-to-back Yeika Jimenez Diaz three-point baskets helped the team move their lead to 14-7. The team went into the second quarter of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game leading 17-9 after a Wright three-pointer.

A pair of free throws by Mayo at the beginning of the second quarter gave the Lady Bulldogs a double-digit lead at 19-9. A three-point play by Mikalee Martin and a three-point basket by Jaci Powell helped the team keep their double-digit advantage as the score moved to 25-14. The offense went through a small scoring drought though, allowing Truett McConnell to cut the lead down to two at the halftime break as the scoreboard read 31-29.

The first basket of the second half gave the opponents a one-point advantage. Wright gave the lead back to the Lady Bulldogs with a three-pointer and Jacelyn Stone and Diaz scored to make the lead 38-32. Ella Crowder hit a three-pointer to make the team's lead ten points, a score of 45-35, with 2:34 left in the third quarter. The team continued to hold their double-digit advantage, taking a 53-41 lead into the fourth quarter on Mayo's three-point basket.

Truett McConnell scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter. A. Crowder broke the scoring rally with a jump shot but with 1:17 left in the game, the opponents had cut the lead to three points. Tennessee Wesleyan won the free throw game to end the contest. Wright, A. Crowder, Stone, and Abbey Barr all hit free throws to close out the game, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 64-60 victory.

Diaz led the scoring efforts with 18 points while Wright added 13 points. Mayo, A. Crowder, and Martin each finished with five rebounds.

The win moved the team's record to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the AAC.
