Softball Splits AAC Doubleheader Against Bluefield
BLUEFIELD, Va.- The softball team earned a split on Wednesday. The team fell in the first game of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Bluefield University 5-3 but won the second game 9-0 in six innings.
Game One:
The top of the first inning saw the teams exchange runs. The run for the Lady Bulldogs came when Macy Chastain scored from second on Ashley Allen's single. Bluefield scored a run in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead into the third.
In the third inning, TWU scored two runs to take back the lead. Chastain opened the inning with a double down the left field line, getting to third on a quick advance. Tatum Massengale's ground out gave Chastain the space to score, tying the game 2-2. After getting on base with a walk, Brantley Bruggink moved to third on a Taylor Rose single. A pair of double steals put the Lady Bulldogs ahead when Bruggink stole home.
The offense went cold for TWU as Bluefield scored three runs over the remainder of the game to take the first game 5-3.
Game Two:
Bruggink started the scoring in the third inning for the Lady Bulldogs, bringing in one run by hitting a sacrifice fly that brought in Brooklyn Deaver to give the team a 1-0 lead at the end of the inning. The Lady Bulldogs did the majority of their work in the fourth inning, scoring five runs.
Massengale started off the fourth inning with a walk and moved to second on an Allen bunt single. A throwing error on Olivia McNabb's hit brought in both runners, moving the team's lead to 3-0. Brooklyn Deaver hit a double to join McNabb on base. Avery Hope came to the plate and hit a single, advancing each runner a base, scoring McNabb. A wild pitch brought in Deaver while Bruggink's second RBI of the game brought in Hope, moving the team's lead to 6-0.
In the sixth inning, TWU scored their seventh, eighth, and ninth runs of the game to invoke the run rule. Rose started the inning with single, moving to third on a Deaver bunt single. Hope recorded a second RBI, this time a sacrifice fly that Rose scored on. Rheaagan Thomas got on base with a fielder's choice and scored on Bruggink's third RBI of the game, this time off a double. Bruggink became the final run of the game, scoring on a Rachel Carpenter RBI single and putting the team ahead 9-0 in the six-inning win.
McNabb had a career-high 11 Ks in the complete-game shutout.
The win moved the team's record to 3-6 overall and 3-6 in the AAC.
