BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.- The softball team was unable to find much traction on their road trip on Tuesday. The team fell in both their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) games against Montreat College by identical scores of 6-2.
Game One:
The teams exchanged runs in the first inning. After getting on base with a walk, two groundouts got Brantley Bruggink to third base. Taylor Rose's single brought Bruggink home to give the Lady Bulldogs the first lead of the game. TWU broke the tie in the third inning.
Tatum Massengale opened the inning with a walk. After a Katie Williet sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch left Massengale standing on third, Avery Hope hit a single up the middle that gave Massengale the chance to score, giving the team a 2-1 lead. Montreat scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to pull ahead and win the first game 6-2.
Rose and Hope each finished with an RBI.
Game Two:
Through the first two innings, neither team scored as pitching and defense dominated the game. Montreat broke the game open though in the third and fourth innings, scoring three runs in each inning.
TWU attempted a comeback in the seventh inning. Rheagan Thomas, Rachel Carpener, and Haven Carter all opened the seventh inning by loading the bases. A fielder's choice on Ashley Allen's at-bat brought in Thomas while Massengale hit a single that brought in pinch-runner Bruggink. The comeback attempt fell short though as the third out was recorded before they could score again.
Allen and Massengale had RBIs in the game.
TWU (2-5, 2-2 AAC) will be back on the road next Wednesday when they travel to face Bluefield University at 1:00 p.m.
