Softball Sweeps Columbia in AAC Opener

ATHENS, Tenn.- The softball team won two close games on Sunday. In the team's home and Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) opener, the Lady Bulldogs had a walk-off 2-1 win and a 3-1 win over the Columbia College Koalas.

Game One:

The first run of the game went on the board in the fourth inning. Avery Hope, who got on base with a walk, quickly got to third with a passed ball and a Brooke Freeman sacrifice bunt. A bunt single by Taylor Rose brought in Hope to give the team a 1-0 lead after the fourth. Columbia tied the score in the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning, Rose would score the game-winning run. Opening the inning as the first batter, Rose hit a single up the middle and moved to second on a Courtney Wilson sacrifice bunt. A stolen base brought Rose closer at third and a single by Ashley Allen allowed Rose to cross home plate, giving the team the 2-1 walk-off win.

Isabella Jenkins, who pitched a perfect game through 4.2 innings, pitched a complete game in the win. Rose and Allen each had an RBI in the game.

Game Two:

Trailing by a run after the top of the first, the softball team took the lead in the bottom of the first.

Brantley Bruggink opened the batting with a walk and a bunt single got Macy Chastain to first. Tatum Massengale's contact with the ball resulted in an error that ultimately moved each runner an extra base, allowing Bruggink to score to tie the game. TWU took the lead when Chastain scored on the throw attempt of Massengale's stolen base.

The pitching of Olivia McNabb and Allen carried the team until they were able to add an insurance run in the sixth inning. Chastain opened the inning with a triple and scored on a Massengale error, helping the team win the game to sweep the doubleheader.

McNabb had three strikeouts during five innings in the win while Allen struck out two batters in the save. Massengale had one RBI in the win.

TWU (2-3, 2-0 AAC) goes on the road for their next AAC doubleheader, taking on Montreat College on Tuesday. The first game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
