Softball Splits Road Finale Against Milligan
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn.- The softball team was on the road for the final time on Wednesday. The team split their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader against the Milligan University Buffaloes, winning the first game.
Game One:
Tennessee Wesleyan held a 2-0 lead for the majority of the game. The two runs went on the board for the Lady Bulldogs in the first inning. The game opened with a walk by Macy Chastain, who quickly got to second via a steal. A fielding error put runners on the corners as Mackenzie Baldwin stood on first after the error and Chastain was on third. A single down the right field line by Tatum Massengale gave the team the two-run advantage they carried until the sixth inning.
The score changed for both teams in the sixth inning. Courtney Sneed played a part in a three-run inning for TWU as she opened the hitting with a single up the middle. A series of errors on Chastain's single moved pinch-runner Ali Richards advanced to third, and Chastain ended up on third after the errors. A single up the middle by Taylor Penning brought both Richards and Chastain in for runs. Penning, who was second after the throw, put the Lady Bulldogs up 5-0 on Baldwin's double. Milligan scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The team added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Kaley Bradley reached on a fielder's choice and got to second on a wild pitch. A single through the right side by Richards propelled the team to a 6-2 win.
Massengale and Penning both had two RBIs in the game while Baldwin and Richards had one RBI each. Bailee Phillips had four strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
Game Two:
The momentum did not carry over to the second game for the Lady Bulldogs. The team only scored one run in the game, coming in the second inning on a Korie Thompson fielder's choice that Gracie Calton scored on. Milligan took the lead in the fourth inning, going on to win by a final score of 6-1.
Thompson finished with an RBI in the game.
Tennessee Wesleyan returns home with a 19-10 overall record and a 15-9 record in the AAC. Up next for the Lady Bulldogs is Senior Day against the University of Pikeville on Friday. The conference doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
