Softball Sweeps Columbia
COLUMBIA, S.C.- The softball picked up a sweep on Saturday. The team won the two Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) games against the Columbia College Koalas 5-4 and 6-3 (ten innings).
Game One:
The teams changed the score in the second inning. With the bases loaded after Tatum Massengale and Courtney Wilson singles, and a Macy Chastain walk, Courtney Sneed earned a walk to move Massengale off third. A sacrifice fly by Taylor Penning gave the Lady Bulldogs a 2-0 lead as Wilson scored. Columbia scored two runs in the bottom of the second and a third in the third inning to hold a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, the teams each scored again. TWU was able to load the bases with singles by Bailee Phillips, Kaley Bradley, and Carlynn Atamaniuk. Chastain tied the score when her hit resulted in an error, allowing Phillips to score from third. Columbia scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to break the 3-3 tie.
In the sixth inning, Phillips gave the team the lead. Penning opened the inning with a single. Mackenzie Baldwin followed with a hit that resulted in an error, allowing both runners to move into scoring position. Phillips hit a double to center field, bringing both Penning and Baldwin home and giving the Lady Bulldogs a 5-4 lead they held onto to win the first game.
Isabella Jenkins got the pitching win, striking out five batters. Phillips picked up the save.
Game Two:
Columbia took the first lead of the game in the second inning. Tennessee Wesleyan tied the score in the third inning. After getting on base with a single, Sneed eventually scored on an error on Phillips' at-bat. The tie was brief though as the opponents scored two runs in the bottom of the third to lead 3-1.
The Lady Bulldogs scored one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to force extra innings. Brooke Freeman made the run in the fifth inning in the form of a solo home run. Bradley was the game-tying run, scoring on a Massengale RBI single from second base. Neither team made any traction in the eighth and ninth innings.
In the tenth, TWU went up for good. With Chastain standing on second due to the international tiebreaker rule, Sneed hit a double to center field that gave the runner the space to score. A fielder's choice on Penning's hit forced Sneed out at home but Bradley's ground out resulted in an error, giving Penning time to score. Phillips became the final run of the game, scoring on a Baldwin double as the Lady Bulldogs recorded three outs in the bottom of the tenth to complete the sweep with the 6-3 win.
Phillips got the pitching win.
Tennessee Wesleyan (4-2, 3-1 AAC) will be back in action on Thursday when they play their home opener against Cumberland University. The doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m.
