Softball Score 23 Combined Runs in Sweep of Oakwood
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- The softball team went on the road to play a non-conference game on Thursday. The team traveled to Alabama to play the Oakwood University Lady Ambassadors in a doubleheader.
Game One:
Macy Chastain was the first run of the game for the Lady Bulldogs. Bailee Phillips was the second run of the game. Both were in the first inning. Chastain got on with a single and moved to second on Phillips' walk. Emily Higgins hit a single that brought both baserunners across home plate to give the team a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning, TWU scored again.
The run in the fifth inning was scored by Chastain, who opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a stolen base. A single on the next at-bat gave Chastain the space to score, giving the team three runs in the game.
The game reached the final score of 7-1 in the seventh inning. Chastain recorded her fourth hit of the game with a single to get to first base. Sneed's single move Chastain over to second and each runner moved over a base via a stolen base. Phillips hit a single that brought Chastain across home plate, while Sneed scored on a Higgins RBI groundout. Kaley Bradley turned Phillips, who had stolen second, into a run with her hit, and scored a few moments later on Mackenzie Baldwin's double to give the team their 7-1 score they won by.
Chastain finished a perfect 4-4 from the plate with three runs and three stolen bases. Higgins led the team with three RBIs. Madison Stott got the pitching win.
Game Two:
The offense exploded in the second game to the tune of 16 runs. Taylor Penning was responsible for the first two runs of the game in the first inning as Chastain and Phillips scored on her single.
In the second inning, the team added five more runs. The scoring started with Tatum Massengale and Carlynn Atamaniuk getting home on Chastain's triple. Chastain scored on a Sneed single while the latter scored on a Penning single. Penning time on the bases came to an end when she scored on an error on Bradley's at-bat, giving the team seven runs through two innings.
The third inning saw the first three batters, Massengale, Atamaniuk, and Chastain, all hit singles to load the bases. Sneed unloaded the bases and ended up on third by hitting a triple, giving the team 10 runs in the game. Penning hit a sacrifice fly to make the 11th run of the contest.
Sneed had two more RBIs in the fourth inning while scoring a run as well in the inning. Phillips had an RBI and scored a run in the fourth inning, making the score 15-1. The last run of the game came in the fifth inning when Courtney Wilson scored on a fielder's choice in the inning, making the final score 16-1 when the game ended in the fifth inning due to the run rule.
Penning was 3-3 in the game with three RBIs. Sneed led the offense with six RBIs. Phillips had nine strikeouts in the game.
The two wins moved the Lady Bulldogs' record to 12-7 overall. The team will look to add more wins to their record when they host conference foe Milligan University on Friday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m.
