Game 2
ATHENS, Tenn.- Due to the forecasted weather later in the week, the softball team returned to the field on Sunday. A game that was supposed to be played on Wednesday was moved to Sunday due to the chance of rain. The change saw the Lady Bulldogs face the Columbia College Koalas in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader.
Game One:
The game saw the runs come in a series of one-innings. Columbia scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Tennessee Wesleyan tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Macy Chastain opened the inning with a bunt single, moving to second via a stolen base. After moving to the third-base corner on Taylor Penning's single, Chastain scored on Mackenzie Baldwin's single to left field, evening the score 1-1. Unfortunately, the remaining runs came for Columbia, who went on to win the first game of the doubleheader 3-1.
Game Two:
The offense started much earlier in the second game. Beginning in the first inning, Courtney Sneed hit a single up the middle and moved to second on a stolen base. Penning put runners on the corners with her single moving Sneed to third base. A pick off at third kept Sneed from becoming the first run of the game, but Penning was able to get to third on the attempt and scored on Bailee Phillips RBI single, giving the team a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
TWU added insurance runs in back-to-back innings. Starting in the third, Phillips opened the inning with a double. A sacrifice bunt by Avery Hope moved Phillips to third, who would score on Baldwin's single to move the lead to 2-0.
In the fourth inning, Chastain got on base again with a bunt single and stole second base to move into scoring position. Penning hit a single to right field, bringing Chastain home for the third run of the game, a 3-0 score that remained through the game as Phillips did not allow a run through the remaining innings.
Phillips got the start in the circle, pitching the entire game and striking out 11 batters.
Up next for the Lady Bulldogs (4-3, 3-1 AAC) is a road trip to face Bluefield University on Tuesday. The AAC doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
