Softball Drops Game Against No. 3 Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.- The softball team opened the 2024 season on Wednesday. The team went on the road to play the No. 3 team in the NAIA, the University of the Cumberlands Lady Patriots.

Courtney Sneed recorded the first hit of the game in the first inning, but the three outs to end the inning were recorded before Sneed could turn into a run. Cumberlands took the first lead of the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and put the team in a 3-0 hole after the second inning.

In the third inning, TWU got a runner on when Avery Hope belted a ball to left field for a double. Hope was left on base though. In the bottom half of the same inning, Cumberlands moved their lead to seven runs.

The remainder of the game saw the Lady Bulldogs record two more hits, coming off the bat of Taylor Penning and Courtney Wilson. Unfortunately, Tennessee Wesleyan fell in the game by a final score of 7-0.

Bailee Phillips had five strikeouts in four innings of relief.

Up next for the Lady Bulldogs (0-1) is a road trip to Cumberland University on Tuesday. The doubleheader between the two teams is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
