Men's Tennis Wins Two Games in NAIA Tournament to Advance to Semifinals of NAIA Tournament
Mobile, Ala.- The men's tennis team were in action at the 2023 NAIA Men's Tennis National Championship Tournament on Wednesday. The team, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, found themselves in an unusual situation. Due to the previous day's weather postponing the matches, the Bulldogs had to potentially play two matches. The first match was their originally scheduled match against the No. 20 seed McPherson College.
In the match, the Bulldogs took the doubles point thanks to a 6-2 win by Gabriel Ortiz and Ruben Busch in the No. 2 spot and a 6-1 win by Jesus Fernandez and Zoilo Rios in the No. 3 spot.
Nicolas Cortes Campos (6-1, 6-2; No. 2 singles) Rios (7-5, 7-5; No. 4 singles) and Busch (7-6, 6-0, No. 6 singles) gave the team the three points they needed to clinch the match with a 4-0 score. The win sent the team to the quarterfinals, which were played later in the day.
The quarterfinals match came against the No. 5 seed in the tournament, the Southeastern University Fire.
The doubles point went the opposite way then in the team's first match as the Fire took the doubles point to lead 1-0.
The singles flipped the match in Tennessee Wesleyan's favor. Even though Southeastern won one of the singles point, the Bulldogs won the match 4-2. The team gathered four points from Campos, Fernandez, Octavio Volpi, and Busch.
The win moved the team to the semifinals of the tournament for the third consecutive season. TWU (21-1) will face the No. 1 seed Keiser University on Friday at 2:00 p.m., with a trip to the national championship on the line.
