Athens, Tenn.- The men's soccer team, receiving votes in the NAIA poll, was back in action on Wednesday. The team played the Kentucky Christian University Knights in a conference contest in Athens.
TWU took control of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest early, scoring ten minutes into the game. Jonah Lewis had the goal for the Bulldogs, converting a Tyriq Gordon and Wynand Wessels assist into a 1-0 advantage as 10:56 ticked on the clock. In the 25th minute, Tennessee Wesleyan scored another goal. This time, Gordon was the scorer, scoring on an assist by Cian Gantley and Charlie Wood. Less than two minutes later, Rio Hairyes extended the lead to three goals, scoring on a Zach Blair assist. At the 30:07 mark, Gavin Morgan connected with a Dave Neijenhuis corner kick to make the lead 4-0. The advantage for the Bulldogs was five at the half as Wessels scored a goal with three seconds remaining in the first half to make the score 5-0 at the break.
The team scored five more goals in the second half, starting with a goal by Gantley. Neijenhuis got into the scoring action too, making a goal in the 65th minute. Five minutes later, Lewis scored his second goal of the game to move TWU ahead 8-0. On a corner kick, Jan Schmalenberg connected with Neijenhuis' kick to make the lead 9-0. The tenth and final goal of the game gave Lewis a hat trick with his third goal, giving the Bulldogs a 10-0 victory.
This was the second hat trick this season for Lewis.
The win moved the team's record to 7-1-5 overall and 6-1-2 in the AAC.
