No. 2 Seed Baseball Explodes for 13 Runs in AAC Tournament
KINGSPORT, Tenn.- The baseball team returned to the field at Hunter Wright Stadium for their next game in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Baseball Championship Tournament on Thursday. The second-seeded Bulldogs faced the No. 6 seed in the bracket, the Montreat College Cavaliers.
Whereas the previous game TWU saw late-game excitement, the game against the Cavaliers saw runs score. Thirteen to be exact. Evan Magill and Daniel Stewart helped the Bulldogs take the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Magill hit a single that brought Jack Stevens home from third and Stewart hit a double that gave Magill the chance to score. The team's 2-0 lead grew to 4-0 in the third.
Magill was responsible again, this time hitting a two-run home run that scored Marco Martinez, who was previously standing on second after a ground-rule double. The fourth inning saw the team add five more runs to their lead.
Corbin Shaw opened the fourth inning with a single. After getting to second on a ground out, Cayle Webster's double scored Shaw. Martinez would bring Webster home with his single, while Magill hit a double to bring Martinez to home plate. Stewart hit a home run with Magill on second to move the score to 9-0.
In the fifth inning, Jack Stevens hit home run as Dante Leach stood on base, moving the score to 11-0. In the sixth, Stewart hit a triple that helped bring Magill around the bases and Kruise Newman got courtesy-runner Hagen Escoto home with a ground out, making the final score 13-0 in seven innings.
The win moved the Bulldogs (35-15) one game away from playing for a conference title and earning an automatic bid to the national tournament. The team's next game will be on Friday at 4:00 p.m. They will face the winner of No. 10 Union and No. 6 Montreat.
