Baseball Concludes Season at Upland Bracket
Upland, Ind.- The baseball team, the top seed in the Upland Bracket, returned to the field at the NAIA Opening Round for a contest against the No. 4 seed, the Point Park University Pioneers. The team needed to win the game against the Pioneers to stay alive in the bracket and advance to the first game of the championship series.
Through four innings, the score remained scoreless. In the fifth inning, the offenses brought runs across home plate.
Point Park started the scoring, bringing one to home plate to take a 1-0 lead after the top of the fifth inning. TWU took a 4-1 lead to end the bottom of the fifth. The team achieved the lead when Carson Ford hit a bomb over the right field fence with Cody McGill (single), Preston Welchel (single), and Parker Stinnett (single) all standing on base for a grand slam and pushing the team ahead by three runs. Point Park scored twice over the next two innings to cut the team's lead down to one run. Ford gave the team some relief again, this time hitting a double that scored Welchel, making the score 5-3 through seven innings.
Disaster struck in the eighth inning as the opponents scored two runs to tie the game 5-5. Point Park was able to score the winning run in the tenth inning, ending the Bulldogs' time in the NAIA Opening Round with a 6-5 win.
Ford finished the game with five RBIs. Sam Rochard led the team with seven strikeouts in the game.
The team ends the season with a 43-11 record. This is the third season in a row the team has won 40 or more games.
