The 2017 women's soccer team opened their season on Thursday with a solid 2-1 win over nationally ranked #16 Cumberland University. The Lady Bulldogs have played Cumberland for seven years running early in each season, and never won one of those games until this week. This also serves as the first win over a top 25 opponent for the Lady Bulldogs under Coach Kolarova's tenure. "I'm pumped, we played a very good game today," said Kolarova after the game, "our players stepped up all over the field and we looked good out there."
The Bulldogs seemed to have the momentum of possession in the first half, and struck goal first in the 37th minute off the head of senior forward Nicole Broderick when she connected to the end of a cross from sophomore midfielder Siobhan Patterson. Cumberland University came back just before the half time break in the 43rd minute to tie the game with a header goal from a corner kick. The teams went into the half time break tied at 1-1 and tied for shots at 5 a piece.
In the second half Cumberland found their footing and created more opportunities and Tennessee Wesleyan were forced to defend strong. Despite Cumberland outshooting TWU 11-4 in the second half, all TWU needed was the right serve at the right moment, and in the 84th minute that moment struck. Junior forward Rachel Bean knocked in a corner kick that found senior Nicole Broderick's head to give TWU the 2-1 lead which would stand for the last 6 minutes of the game. Senior goal keeper McKenna Loges spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs and recorded 12 saves in the win.
Tennessee Wesleyan starts the season 1-0 and will next face NCAA Division 1 opponent Belmont University in an exhibition match. TWU's next home game is not until September 12th with a match up against Bethel University.
